Thando goes from the dusty streets of Slovo Park to national glory

A star in the making: Thando Mokgabudi (14), from Slovo Park, was crowned the best goalkeeper at the CAF African Schools Football Championship in Zanzibar.

The South African U15 girls’ national team has etched their name in history by winning the CAF African Schools Football Championship in Zanzibar.

This victory is a testament to the team’s talent and hard work and a source of pride for the Slovo Park community.

At the heart of this victory is Thando Mokgabudi (14), the first and youngest player from Slovo Park to make it to the national U15 girls’ football team.

Her journey from the dusty streets of her community to the stage of an international football tournament is nothing short of inspirational.

Thando’s hard work and perseverance paid off spectacularly in Zanzibar. She was a key player in her team’s victory and earned the tournament’s best goalkeeper title.

This award highlights her exceptional performance and solidifies her status as a rising star in SA football.

Thando’s talent was evident from a young age. Her coach, Thabiso Mohlala, first noticed her abilities on the field when she played in local matches, where she consistently stood out as a promising player in the Springs Ladies FC.

“As Thando and her team returned home, they carried with them not only the pride of their nation but also the dreams and aspirations of countless young girls who saw in them a reflection of their potential,” said Mohlala.

“Thando’s story, in particular, stands as a powerful reminder that dreams can become a reality with talent, determination, and the right support.”

Thando added that she was thrilled to have represented the country and her community, thanking Mohlala, as well for grooming her soccer career.

Her leadership qualities and athletic talent make her a role model for her peers and a source of inspiration for young athletes across SA. Thando’s mom Mabontle expressed immense pride and joy in her daughter’s accomplishments, especially in representing her country.

“I am grateful for the opportunities given to Thando and appreciate the support from everyone, including the community of Slovo Park and her team,” said Mabontle.

She hopes that Thando’s success will inspire others, and she extends her gratitude to all who have contributed to her daughter’s journey.
