Amazing race for rhino conservation takes Springs by storm

The scavenger hunt tested competitors' skills, patience and heat tolerance.

OUR Amazing Race kicked off in Springs in the sweltering heat on November 2, for a day of running, decoding and more running.

Various groups showed up and tried to beat the clock while getting the most points, for large cash prizes in this scavenger hunt to raise funds for Insimbi Legacy Projects. Funds will go towards rhino conservation.

The race was the brainchild of Mongoose Events approached by Sharon Janse van Rensburg, Insimbi’s brand ambassador to bring the race to Springs for rhino conservation as well as the community.

The theme was ‘Out of Africa’.

First to finish were the ProSafe Pioneers, winning the R5 000 cash prize, followed by Hillcrest Viagra Falls winning R1 000.

The Vastrappers team: Lara van Rensburg, Kerry Marais, Cheyene van Rensburg and Giacomo (Jack) D’Arrigo.

The best dressed, best spirit, best mascot and best car all won R500 each. In order they were Buffalo Soldiers, Dora and the Four Explorers, Peculiar Gen and Bosbokkies.

There were 24 teams, all racing to collect items and geocaches, taking photos at historic sites in Springs, and solving riddles and clues to complete an open-air escape room at Stable Inn at the end of the day.

Some of the tasks of the race required skill, or a whole lot of luck, as one of the stops had activities like bokdrol spoeg, archery, axe throwing, and other target games.

Other tasks required more patience, like the task requiring competitors to count the number of certain types of golf balls in a bucket to decipher the code for one of the geocaches.

Others required planning, as it can be easy to miss the geocache at one of the spots where you have to complete a photo challenge, ensuring that you have to drive several kilometres out of town twice to get both done.

For some it was a blast, for others, it was a pain. For many, it was a stiff competition, and competitive sides came out when several teams were at the same task or stopped.

The day wouldn’t be possible without the mass of sponsors, namely Vision Air Brakes, Mongoose Events, Insimbi Legacy Projects, Springs Mall, Elco Steel, Divine Be Gracious/Coffee Shop, Ghostguard Security and T7 Motors.

Other sponsors included The Springs Advertiser, Stable Inn, Dynamic Archery, Springs Garden Centre, Elco Butchery and Pick ‘n Pay Strubenvale.

Insimbi Legacy Projects has an open book policy, making their financial information publicly available to promote transparency. All Insimbi’s staff are volunteers, who gain no financial benefit from the project.
