SAAFA salutes another high flying year
The organisation is soaring into the new year.
Songs of cheer rang out as over 30 members of the South African Air Force Association (SAAFA) East Rand Branch gathered to raise a glass to yet another successful year.
Taking their seats at Café @The Range in Glen Marais on November 15, members charged their glasses while engaging in customary SAAFA banter.
They recounted glory days spent soaring through the clouds and paid tribute to those who earned their eternal wings.
Before opening the floor to Jannie Conradie and Dr Vic Herbst, who agreed to an impromptu performance, branch chairperson Roelf Rossouw took the time to conclude branch administration.
“This year has been great joy and growth. Our branch has 75 registered members and 56 full members. It is heartening to see that former airmen and women and aeronautical enthusiasts are not only part of our ranks but are contributing to keeping this rich history alive,” he said.
Taking a moment to reflect on the year, Rossouw toasted beloved members who have passed away.
“It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Arthur and Emmy Bradshaw, Shaun Norval and Mac McCloskey,” he said with a lump in his throat.
“We salute their dedication to the branch, its members and man’s continued aspirations to glide like eagles.”
With a smile, it was evident the chairperson prepared a joke or two before delivering the rib-ticklers. He said the branch’s executive committee was excited to partner with the branches from Johannesburg and Pretoria to host the 80th annual national congress next year.
“It is an honour and privilege to be the custodians of this momentous celebration. With the support of our dedicated members, we believe we will put on quite a show.”
With the formalities out of the way, Conradie strummed his ukulele, breaking into a festive song. SAAFA is open to all former South African Air Force members, and those who worked or are currently employed in the aeronautical sector, as well as enthusiasts.
