Troubled Springs Extension residents raise concerns

Springs Extension residents are concerned that they will forcefully have to sell their homes.

Residents of Springs Extension called an urgent meeting on Sunday morning regarding the unacceptable behaviour that some residents face daily.

Ward 74 Clr Thulani Simelane attended the meeting. According to residents, the park, where children used to play in the past, is inaccessible due to the constant parties held there.

These parties consist of hundreds of individuals playing loud music for days on end, drinking in public, littering and even urinating on other residents’ private property.

Terry Merrifield, who lives across from the park, says on some days, she cannot even access her driveway.

“I have been living here my whole life, but in the last six years, things started to get out of hand. I am sick and tired of the constant blaring of music and them not having any respect for anyone else’s peace,” she said.

What’s going on in the park isn’t their only concern. A lot of houses in this area are rentals with as many as 31 and even 52 residents living in one home. These overcrowded houses are often the reason the rest of the residents are suffering from power and water outages.

Allegedly the streets of Springs Extension are also being used for car spinning and racing. Some residents are concerned that they will end up forcefully selling their houses.

“I am aware that there is no peace in Springs Extension and that you guys are suffering. I encourage you to stand together as a community while we try to address this problem,” Simelane said.

He acknowledged the actions of some residents and advised the alarmed residents to be patient with him.
