Community cleans up Struisbuilt Dam
Community members united to clean up the Struisbuilt Dam last weekend, turning a vision sparked by Frikkie de Bruin into a collective effort to restore the once-neglected site, ensuring it remains a safe, beautiful destination for all.
The Struisbuilt Dam received love from community members who joined hands to clean it up last weekend.
A vision that began almost nine months ago by Frikkie de Bruin gained traction with other residents, who saw the opportunity to restore the dam.
De Bruin shared his disappointment about the dam’s deterioration over the years.
“People have taken advantage of the dam’s seclusion, which has led to it being a hangout for criminals. There were people also cutting down the trees on the other side of the dam,” said De Bruin.

“We managed to remove all the nets in the dam to prevent poaching the fish. We don’t mind people visiting the dam, but it becomes a problem when they poach the fish daily.”
De Bruin said some fish at the Struisbulit Dam were extracted from the Jack Ellis Park in Selcourt.
“We have patrollers coming here to oversee the activities happening during the day. At the end of the day, one man’s ambition becomes the community’s dream,” he said.
De Bruin and the community members said they want everyone to visit the dam without worrying about safety and litter.
“It’s a beautiful place that just needs to be taken care of,” they said.
