WATCH: Operation Shanela sweeps through Springs

The operation has already seen an excess of 200 suspects being arrested for various crimes.

A collaborative task force came together to clean up the streets of greater Springs by conducting a roadblock on January 16.

The efforts of the teams, comprising the SAPS, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic Department, crime prevention wardens, Home Affairs, CPF and other stakeholders, paid off once again as Operation Shanela cleaned the town of crime and lawlessness.

The operation started on January 15, with the tracing of suspects for various crimes. Two hundred and three suspects have been caught during the operation thus far in the greater Ekurhuleni area, including Springs. Among those, a further 170 were nabbed by detectives for committing various crimes.

Deputy district commissioner Brigadier Lebohang Machakela further led the operation in the Springs policing precinct where 17 illegal immigrants were arrested, five suspects were arrested for possession of drugs, two suspects were arrested for selling liquor without a licence, one suspect was arrested for dealing in drugs, three arrested for possession of dangerous weapons and two were arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes.

An illegal mining operation was also conducted parallel to the operation in Springs resulting in three suspects being arrested for conducting illegal mining and for being illegal immigrants.

“We want to deal with crime in its totality,” declared Machakela.

An imbizo was also conducted at Skoomplaas informal settlement where Machakela and other senior officers addressed the community members and allowed them to raise their concerns regarding crime-related issues.

Machakela commended the persistent efforts of all the law enforcers in their pursuit of ridding the community of crime.
