Diary of a birding club: the weather makes for interesting sightings

The Springs Birding Club is welcoming new and enthusiastic members.

The Springs Birding Club is a new club that promises unforgettable terrain and an insight into the vast bird life of the town.

They aim to provide an informative and fun outlook into birding for novice and professional birders. Club founder Sean Byrne has described the club’s outings from a birder’s perspective.

“Walks continue on Saturday mornings as planned.”

The birding club is steadily growing with 27 birders in the group. A core group members number about five to 10 per weekend.

He mentions there are various interesting sightings to note.

“The sightings range from raptors to small brown jobs. The autumn weather cycles are upon us, making for some interesting birding experiences.”

He shares good sightings are spotted, and they update lists almost daily. Sean also appeals for donations of old binoculars.

“It is for the sea cadets operating from the museum premises and surrounding areas. We will use the binoculars during birding walks and talks when training the sea cadets on birding, observational and scoping training.”

He requested the binoculars to be in working order when donated.

“The idea is to train and develop observational skills and continue using a hands-on approach in the old proper scouting way.”

Beginner birders and hikers can also use the spare binoculars. For more information on the club or to make donations, contact Sean at 071 611 9441 or email sean.byrne@imaginet.co.za
