Metro’s inaction causes frustrations for residents
The trench has been left open for over a month.
Residents on Silica Avenue in Dersley have been subjected to a nightmare as the metro still hasn’t filled the trench it dug in February.
Jaques Hazelhurst, the property owner whose house is at the centre of the issue, complained to the Springs Advertiser about the metro’s failures.
“They initially came to dig over a month ago citing an electrical issue and they left exposed live wires and a big trench just outside my yard in their wake.”
Hazelhurst further added that it has caused him to worry about the safety of his children and other residents.
“Children could fall and hurt themselves. It’s wide enough to fit a grown man.”
The metro confirmed the wires had been fixed but they were waiting for the trench to dry up so they could fill it up again.
“While digging the trench, a water pipe was damaged. The incident was escalated to the water department for repair.
“Due to wet weather the water department is waiting for the trench to dry up before they close the open trench,” says the metro’s spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini.
Hazelhurst argues that this has gone on for too long because there was a point where the rain stopped and the trench was dry, but nobody came to fill it up.

“It was dry, but because of the rains, it has filled up with water again. It’s getting more and more dangerous by the day.”
He is not the only one affected as his neighbours have started feeling the brunt as well.
“Cars have made a temporary path that goes right over my neighbour’s pavement and that is also ruining his property.
“He tried to put different barriers but they were either removed or ignored. This is a major danger zone where an accident is waiting to happen.”
