100-Year milestone celebrated at Springs Retirement Village

Duifie Brand,'s family and loved ones celebrated her long life with a lunch at Springs Retirement Village.

Not many can say they have lived through a world war, the beginning and end of apartheid and a pandemic.

This is the reality for Duifie Brand, a Springs Retirement Village resident who on May 8 turned 100 years old.

The village’s staff members, along with Duifie’s friends and loved ones, including her son, Philip (69), celebrated her centennial birthday with a lunch on Thursday morning.

Duifie was born in Bothaville in 1925 and raised on a farm along the banks of the Vaal River. After completing high school in Potchefstroom, she began a career at the SABC, where her command of both English and Afrikaans made her a valued member of the team.

She later worked as a personal assistant at Laerskool Witfield in Boksburg, and eventually served in the East Rand regional office of the Department of Education.

She was married to Daan Brand, a primary school principal for 36 years until he passed in 1986. They had two children, Philip and Hannelie.

Hannelie passed away earlier this year.

After Daan passed away, Duifie never remarried; instead, she focused on raising her children. Philip said his mother is not only known for her gentle presence but for her unwavering habit of prayer.

“Family members often find her speaking aloud to God, praying for each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her relationship with the Lord is intimate and an example to all who know her,” he said.

She has three grandchildren, Daan-Philip, Van Wyk and Riandi as well as three great-grandchildren, Alex, Evan and Elani.

Although Duifie’s eyesight has faded, she was able to hear the beautiful messages from the speakers and smile for photos.

She has been living at the retirement home for the past 10 years. Philip shared an emotional message of gratitude to the staff members for taking care of his mother for all these years.

“We honour each staff member, past and present, who has contributed to our mother’s comfort, wellbeing, and peace of mind. Your patience, professionalism, and heartfelt care have made all the difference, and we will always remain grateful,” he said.

Among the staff members present was Daniela Muller, the nursing services manager and the village manager, Cheere van Heerden.

Van Heerden reiterated that reaching 100 years is a remarkable milestone. She shared a few words to celebrate the lady of the moment.

“Tannie Duifie has witnessed the growth of a beautiful family and community. What makes today so special is not just the number, it is the life behind it. She has lived with grace, strength and humour,” she said.

One of the residents at the home, 82-year-old Alexander Stevenson, delivered a musical item while Duifie’s long-time friend, Susan Wolmarans, gifted her with a hand-made bouquet, which she says Dufie taught her to make some years ago.
