Senior club celebrates 80th anniversary of VE Day

Springs Senior Club members gathered to tell stories of their time living in the UK during World War Two.

Elderly persons gathered to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe at the Springs Senior Citizen Club last Friday.

Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) signifies the historic moment on May 8, 1945 when Germany surrendered its armed forces and thus marked the end of the war on the continent.

The club has members who grew up in the UK who have memories of hearing bombs being dropped in their places of residence, one of them being Stanley Madden.

The 98-year-old recalled how his father fought in both world wars.

The club’s manager, Pauline Houghton said, “This event is a way of honouring the families of those who have lost their lives in the war and it is also a celebration of the peace that we now have.”

She told the stories of the club’s members who had to endure difficulties growing up because of the war.

“Those who lived in big cities had to run to shelters because the industrial cities were the target. VE Day holds great significance to us,” Houghton said.

The old folks enjoyed music and dancing. They were treated to refreshments while they reminisced on past memories. The event included a raffle, which had a cash prize and a Mother’s Day chocolate prize.

Houghton thanked the community for their continuous support as well as the Department of Social Development for being the main sponsors of the club.
