WATCH: No budget to fix Wit road lights, says city

The city says plans to fix lights on Wit Road exist, but vandalism, theft, and lack of funds are holding things back.

Due to a limited budget, there is no money to fix the non-functioning street lights on Wit Road.

This is according to the City of Ekurhuleni and in response to an article in last week’s Springs Advertiser, ‘Wit Road resident slams broken streetlights as crime and safety fears grow’.

City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said there is a plan in hand for fixing the lights, but all will depend on the availability of finances.

He added that complaints logged are being attended to, and that it is also important that road users stick to the rules of the road at all times.

Dlamini added that non-functioning streetlights are a result of many factors including theft, vandalism, and ageing infrastructure.

The city encourages customers to assist in looking after infrastructure in their respective areas to minimise theft and vandalism, which is the major cause of failures.
