Springs cop competes for Mrs Curve title while serving community
Springs-based police officer balances law enforcement and modelling, using her platform to empower women and challenge stereotypes.
When Constable Sister Ramushu isn’t fighting crime in the community, she is dominating pageant stages and inspiring women to be confident in themselves.
The Springs-based police officer in the Public Order Policing Unit is a semi-finalist in the Mrs Curve pageant, a platform dedicated to honouring the beauty, resilience and confidence of fuller-figured women.
The winner will represent South Africa in the Mrs Curve Globe competition in the USA. Ramushu says she has loved pageantry since she was a little girl growing up in Dennilton, Limpopo.
“I love the confidence that pageantry gives women. It allows us to empower others to believe in themselves, and it provides a platform to give back to the community,” she said.
As a teenager, Ramushu survived a traumatic experience when a house intruder attempted to sexually assault her.
“He tried, but I fought back and he fled. I did my own investigation and eventually found out who the perpetrator was, but no case was opened. After that incident, I decided I wanted to be a police officer to combat crimes like the one I almost became a victim of,” she explained.
She joined the SAPS in 2016 and specialises in crowd control, public management and VIP protection. Driven by a strong desire to serve, Ramushu conducts school visits where she educates learners about law enforcement.
“I want people to understand that police officers are also human. We are multifaceted and can have a variety of interests such as modelling, singing, poetry and more.”
During Child Protection Week, she visited her old school, Dinoto Technical Centre, to speak to learners about bullying, mental health and substance abuse.
She also explained the benefits of pageantry, encouraging young people to use it as a platform to showcase their unique talents and abilities. One of her goals is to dispel misconceptions about police officers.
“Parents should be aware of the negative effect of threatening children with the police. This creates a bad image of police officers, as children grow up fearing them instead of seeing them as protectors,” she said.
Besides modelling, Ramushu is an aspiring actress and hopes to star on streaming platforms such as Netflix. She also aims to start a crèche for learners living in informal settlements.
