Springs dojo hosts inter-tournament

Students showcased their discipline and skill in kata and kumite during the Pan-African Karate-Do Federation's inter-club tournament held at the Selcourt SPAR Dojo, as families cheered them on.

The Pan-African Karate-Do Federation hosted an inter-club tournament at the Selcourt SPAR Dojo on Saturday.

Students competed in kata and kumite and were grouped by age. Sensei Thabani Ndlovu said the karatekas were judged on how they carried themselves during combat.

“We scored them on attitude and focus. The goal of this tournament is to assess our students and ensure they are ready to compete on a larger stage,” he said.

The event also served as preparation for the upcoming Women’s Cup Championship on August 9. Ndlovu highlighted karate’s role in a child’s development.

“It develops them holistically – mentally, socially and physically. With mental health issues on the rise and children turning to drugs, we use karate to steer them away from that path.”

He added that karate helps children gain confidence and function better in social settings.

“They function better in social settings because it builds their confidence. We also teach them discipline and how to defend themselves,” Ndlovu said.

He also emphasised the importance of physical health for children and teens, not just adults.

“Staying active helps them stay fit and healthy.”

The event was well-supported by parents and family members, who cheered as the students demonstrated their skills.
