Moyanga Family Foods feeds over 1 000 people in Springs for Mandela Day

In honour of Mandela Day, Moyanga Family Foods served over 1 000 hot meals to underprivileged communities in Springs. With support from SAPS and donations from McDonald’s, the initiative reached people in areas like Payneville and Geduld, turning one day of service into lasting impact.

In celebration of Mandela Day, Moyanga Family Foods fed the underprivileged living in Springs. The food was distributed with the socks that were donated by McDonald’s and with the help of the SAPS.

Peter Moyanga, owner of Moyanga Family Foods, told Springs Advertiser that they decided on making food because they understand the power a single meal can hold, especially in the face of a nationwide hunger crisis.

He said that they had aimed to serve 670 meals in honour of the “67 minutes” theme; however, they reached 1 048 individuals across various communities, including Thandabantu Community Care in Geduld and Payneville.

“We provided a hearty warm meal consisting of rice with a beef, potato and lentil curry and pumpkin and cabbage bredie. We tried to make the meal as nutritionally packed as possible,” said Moyanga.

Moyanga also said that the gratitude from people was overwhelming. He added that their efforts were not only appreciated but also needed.

“Mandela Day is a call to action. For us, it’s not just one day—it’s a reminder that every act of kindness, no matter how small, contributes to building a better world. It’s a legacy of service we’re proud to uphold,” said Moyanga.

Moyanga said that the experience was deeply humbling, which reminded them of the privilege they have and reaffirmed the power of compassion.

“It is a sign that those in need are seen, valued, and worthy of dignity. They are not defined by circumstance, but uplifted through solidarity.”

Moyanga concluded that they hope to grow the initiative and to reach even more families and deepen their impact across new communities.
