Springs future professionals get head start

Young people from Selcourt attended a career expo at the Lighthouse Community Centre, where they engaged with professionals and learnt about study options and financial aid.

The Lighthouse Community Centre hosted a career expo attended by over 100 young people of various ages in Selcourt on July 19.

The event formed part of the community development centre’s strategy to empower youth with information to support informed decisions about their future and careers.

“The key takeaway was having a reachable distance to the professionals, some not far from their ages, with amazing inspiring stories not only on their journeys but on the realities of life after high school and in the workplace,” said Mahlale Mokoena, the co-ordinator of the centre.

The organisers partnered with the social development and labour departments to guide prospective students on how to apply to institutions of higher learning. They were also given realistic insight into student life, helping them make informed decisions about their academic and career paths.

Mokoena said, “We also provided a financial aid in-depth discussion on insights on the dos and don’ts and the opportunities available if your marks were good.“

Various professionals spoke on how they chose their respective careers and the challenges students encounter.

“The discussion was followed by a financial aid presentation led by Ruth Sumbane, and a second panel discussion featuring insights from industry professionals.

“The event was a success. It provided young people one-on-one engagement, which gave them a clear understanding of each field,” Mokoena concluded.
