Laerskool Werda set to compete in chess tournament

The D5 tournament will consist of schools across Springs who will compete to make it to the finals.

Laerskool Werda’s chess teams were ahead of the game in a tournament on August 2, where their accumulated points placed them at the top.

Their accomplishment has earned them a spot in the D5 Tournament, a competition featuring schools from the Springs region.

Before the competition, the school selected five groups five groups made up of its strongest players. They divided the groups into the U9 and U13 teams.

“When we selected the learners who would participate in the tournament, we checked how they follow and apply the rules of chess and if they could play for most of the duration of the game,” the coach, Lindokuhle Mutle, said.

The D5 tournament will determine if the learners go to the finals.

“It’s an exciting opportunity because chess is not that popular in our school, and a lot of children and teachers are still hesitant to join.

Seeing that our school could make it to the D5 and hopefully the finals, more children may be motivated to join,” she said.

The teams practice every Tuesday and Thursday to improve their skills.

“To prepare for the competition, we are going to practise more and give the players additional strategies,” she said.
