WATCH: Springs Senior Club brings festive cheer with mid-year Christmas lunch

The Springs Senior Citizen Club hosted its annual mid-year Christmas luncheon, bringing warmth, music and friendship to over 150 elders in the community.

The Springs Senior Citizen Club hosted its annual mid-year Christmas luncheon on August 8. The club usually hosts the event in July; however, they postponed it because the club manager and organiser, Pauline Houghton, was ill.

Local singer Leon van Zyl provided entertainment as he sang various songs, including Sweet Charlotte and Christmas songs like We Wish You a Merry Christmas and other festive tunes.

Speaking to the Springs Advertiser, Houghton said the purpose of the luncheon was to take a break from the long winter and enjoy a warm meal with close friends at the club.

This mid-year Christmas celebration marks the third year under Houghton’s management.

“When I took over the club, there were 60 people. Now, we have 150 members,” said Houghton.

Houghton also said that the club plays a huge role for the elders in the community who are lonely and those who have lost a spouse.

She added that by hosting the luncheon, the members meet other people and form friendships outside the club.

“This celebration was the biggest we have hosted. The first year we had 100 people, and at last year’s celebration, we had 140 people,” said Houghton.

She thanked the members and board for planning it while she was recovering. Two of the seniors of the club, Anne Hamilton and Allen Steward, were part of the event and spoke to the publication about their time at the luncheon.

Hamilton said that coming to the luncheon made her happy.

“One thing that I enjoy about the celebration is the singing, because I love it,” said Hamilton.

Steward said it was an amazing event that the club hosted. A long-time Springs resident, he moved to Dalpark and has been part of the club for three years. He shared that his favourite part of being a club member is the friendships formed.

“It is important for people to care for senior citizens. It is also important for people to keep the elderly in their social circles,” said Steward.
