Bert Collins Boxing Club celebrates two wins and best boxer award at Alberton tournament

Bert Collins Boxing Club returned home with two victories and a best boxer award after competing at the Alberton tournament, with standout performances from JT Mienie and Tristan van Tonder.

Bert Collins Boxing Club recently attended a boxing tournament at Alberton Boxing Club. Head coach Jeanette Dyzel shared with Springs Advertiser that three of the club’s boxers participated and were able to secure two wins and one loss.

Dyzel said that JT Mienie climbed into the ring against J Alexander from Everlast Boxing Club in Johannesburg. She said that once again, Mienie outboxed his opponent in the first round with his boxing skills, winning by RSC in round one.

Tristan van Tonder entered the ring against K Manuel from Bee Sting Boxing Club in Johannesburg. Dyzel said that Van Tonder showed his boxing skills from round one against a strong Alexander, who had more fights on his record than Van Tonder.

“His opponent tried to knock Van Tonder out, but unfortunately for his opponent, Tristan was too strong and fit. Tristan outboxed his opponent from the start to the end of round three and won on a 3/0 points decision,” she said.

She added that Van Tonder was also declared the best boxer from an outside club. This is the second time in three weeks that he has received the trophy for best boxer.

The club’s Jacobus Jonker faced Fernando Capao from The Real Boxing in Boksburg. Dyzel emphasised that Jonker was leading on points when he dropped his hands too low in round two and was knocked by his opponent, prompting the referee to stop the fight. He lost by RSC in round two.

“As coach, I can only say this: all three of our boxers showed skill and sportsmanship throughout their bouts. Not one of them disappointed us during their bouts. I and coach Frans van der Linde are proud of them; their discipline, sportsmanship, and skills are the best,” she said.

Bert Collins will be hosting a tournament on September 13 at the club in Geduld. The bouts will start at 12:00, and the public is welcome to attend.
