UPDATE: Casseldale boy in critical condition following shooting
After being airlifted from the scene of the shooting, Waldo remains in a critical but stable condition. A family spokesperson shares more.
Waldo Verwey, the young boy who sustained a gunshot wound to the head during a house robbery in Casseldale, remains in a critical but stable condition on life support at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
The incident took place at his home on Thursday evening and not Friday evening as previously reported. His age has also been confirmed to be 11 and not 10.
The Springs Advertiser reached out to Waldo’s stepmother, Christnette Barnard this morning (Monday), who referred all media enquiries to a family spokesperson.
It was clarified that Waldo was treated on scene for his injuries and airlifted to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
“Medical specialists have conducted several tests, and the results are still pending. The family continues to remain hopeful and grateful for the medical team’s dedication and care,” said Suné Meadon in a statement issued on Monday morning.
“The Verwey family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to everyone for the overwhelming support, care, and prayers received during this difficult time.
“A special word of thanks is extended to the community members who gathered on October 4 for the mass prayer and drive ceremony held in Waldo’s honour.
The family is also touched by the heartfelt gesture of local artist Veldstem, who has written a song dedicated to Waldo and his brother, Logan.

“At this time, the family would like to clarify that no official BackaBuddy campaign or trust account has been opened for Waldo or Logan.
“Any updates regarding such initiatives will be communicated through official channels. The family kindly asks that everyone continue to keep Waldo in their thoughts and prayers,” said Meadon.
Springs SAPS are investigating.
