Springs Cub Scout Hannah Coates earns Leaping Wolf Award
From first aid to citizenship skills, 11-year-old Hannah Coates has achieved the Leaping Wolf Award, showing exceptional commitment and personal growth in the Springs Air Scouts.
Hannah Coates (11), a Cub Scout from the Springs Air Scouts Group, achieved the Leaping Wolf Award on October 31.
The award is considered the highest honour a Cub Scout can achieve, representing dedication, skill, and a deep embodiment of the Cub Scout Promise and Law, according to Gareth Langton, known to the Scouts as Akela Mowgli.
Langton told the Springs Advertiser that Hannah’s journey to the Leaping Wolf was one of consistent effort and enthusiasm.
He said the award was not just a badge but the culmination of completing countless challenges, mastering a wide range of proficiency badges – from first aid and tracking to cooking and citizenship – and taking on leadership roles within her Cub Scout Six.
He also said that to achieve the award, a Cub must consistently demonstrate perseverance and a genuine commitment to personal growth, qualities Hannah possesses in spades.

“Her success beautifully illustrates the core mission of the Scouting Programme. We are here to do more than just tie knots; we build character.
“Hannah has consistently demonstrated this grit and determination. She didn’t shy away from the hard work, and in doing so, she has not only earned the Leaping Wolf but has also forged the inner strength and adaptability that will serve her well as she prepares to ‘leap’ up to the Scout Troop,” said Langton.
He congratulated Hannah and said her success was a beacon for all the Cubs, showing what can be achieved through a positive attitude and hard work.
Langton said he is immensely proud of the young leader and wonderful person she has become. Hannah’s parents, Kelly and Johnathan Coates, said Hannah began her Cubs Scout journey during the Covid years, just a small girl with a big heart.
They also said it has been a challenging journey, but she took every challenge in her stride, always giving her best.
“Along the way, she made wonderful friends, learned many new skills, and grew in confidence under the caring guidance of Akela.
“We are proud of the young lady she has become and the courage, kindness, and spirit she has shown every step of the way,” the couple said.
