Gauteng Health urges responsible antibiotic use during World Antimicrobial Awareness Week
The Gauteng Department of Health is urging the public to use antibiotics responsibly during World Antimicrobial Awareness Week to combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.
The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) joined the global community in commemorating World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (November 18 to 24) under the theme, Act now: protect our present, secure our future.
The campaign urged the public to use antibiotics responsibly to help fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and safeguard life-saving medicines.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), AMR happens when bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites no longer respond to treatments, making infections harder to cure and increasing the risk of severe illness and death.
This growing health threat affects humans, animals, plants and the environment. The misuse and overuse of antibiotics are the leading drivers of resistance.
To help prevent AMR, the public is urged to:
• only take antibiotics prescribed by a qualified health professional;
• follow the instructions exactly and complete the full course of treatment;
• never share or use leftover antibiotics;
• avoid demanding antibiotics for viral infections like colds or flu.
“Everyone has a role to play. Good hygiene, routine vaccinations and safe sanitation can reduce the spread of infection and the need for antibiotics,” said the department.
The department added that protecting the environment through avoiding water pollution helps limit the emergence of resistant pathogens.
The department said AMR is a global crisis. However, the correct action could preserve the effectiveness of treatments for future generations.
