School debate team launches shadow shift to fund trip
Learners from Springs’ Boys High will be working a shadow shift at RocoMamas as they push to secure funds for the National Debate League Championships.
The Springs Boys’ High School debating team will roll up their sleeves from 18:00 to 20:00 on November 25.
RocoMamas in the Springs Mall will host the members for a shadow shift fundraiser as part of the team’s fundraising efforts for their trip to the National Debate League (NDL) Championships next year in Cape Town.
According to teacher and co-ordinator Nabeelah Asmal, the idea behind a shadow shift was to create something enjoyable and meaningful for the learners.
She said that it allows them to get directly involved in the fundraising instead of just relying on donations, teaches them responsibility and teamwork, and brings the community into the journey.
The money raised will go directly towards the trip to the national championships, a milestone Asmal believes will have a lasting impact on the boys.

She added that the NDL Championships are a big deal for young debaters. The boys will compete against schools from all over the country, which will push them to think differently, stretch their abilities, build confidence and sharpen analytical skills.
Asmal said the team has prepared through weekly practices, drills, practice rounds and internal debates. They invite other schools for friendly matches when possible.
“More than anything, beyond technique, we’ve been building discipline and helping them believe in themselves. That confidence matters as much as the skills.”
She added that the school and parents have played an important role.
Asmal said, “We’ve been fortunate. The school gives us space to train and time and encouragement to grow. Our parents check in, help with planning and genuinely want to see the kids succeed.”
Partnering with RocoMamas was a natural fit for the team. According to Asmal, the restaurant immediately supported the idea when they heard how important the trip was for the learners.

“It’s a partnership that benefits the kids and supports a local business at the same time. I hope they walk away with a sense of ownership and pride,” Asmal said.
Asmal also said that learning how to work with people, speak to customers and contribute to something bigger than themselves is as valuable as anything they learn in a debate round.
She lauded the team’s commitment, saying they showed maturity and commitment to their work despite challenges, particularly in managing their time.
She said the team is preparing more events, including a debating showcase, a raffle draw, a food day, music and a mini art gallery featuring talented learners. They are also considering a community engagement project.
Asmal urged residents to support the team.
“Their presence and encouragement, even just ordering a meal on the night, go a long way. It’s about showing the learners that their hard work matters and that the community is behind them. We appreciate every bit of support.”
