Search continues for Ekurhuleni MMC following flooding incident in Mozambique

Ekurhuleni authorities, together with national government and Mozambican emergency services, are working to locate MMC Andile Mngwevu following a flooding incident.

The City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed that its MMC for Roads and Transport Management, Andile Mngwevu, is missing following a flooding incident in Mozambique.

According to the city, Mngwevu was travelling in a vehicle that was swept away by floodwaters in the Chokwé area. The incident occurred amid severe flooding affecting parts of the region.

The city said that information received through official diplomatic and security channels indicates that a South African rescue mission deployed to Mozambique has established contact with one of the five people travelling in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

However, the status and whereabouts of Mngwevu and the other occupants remain unconfirmed.

Search and verification efforts are continuing, with the South African mission working closely with local Mozambican authorities and emergency services in the affected area.

The Office of the Executive Mayor, in collaboration with the national government, has facilitated support for Mngwevu’s spouse, who arrived in Mozambique on Thursday night. National authorities are also exploring additional support mechanisms, including security and evacuation assistance, as more information becomes available.

The city said it remains in close contact with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and other relevant national structures.

Further updates will be provided through official channels once information has been confirmed.

The city has appealed to the public and the media to respect the privacy of the Mngwevu family and to refrain from speculation.
