Man sentenced to 10 years for illegal firearm in Gugulethu informal settlement

The Springs Regional Court has sentenced a 37-year-old man to 15 years’ imprisonment after police found a 9mm pistol and ammunition hidden under a mattress during a 2023 operation in Gugulethu informal settlement.

The Springs Regional Court sentenced Seroka Collins Mamalika (37) to 10 years’ imprisonment after he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm in 2023.

Mamalika was found guilty on February 10 after a lengthy investigation by Detective Sergeant Raymond Mogashoa.

Springs police spokesperson Sergeant Charity Zwane said the crime prevention unit received information about a man allegedly in possession of an unlicensed firearm in the Gugulethu informal settlement.

“Upon arrival at the premises, members found Mamalika. A search was conducted, during which a 9mm pistol was found hidden under a mattress, along with three rounds of ammunition,” she said.

She added that Mamalika was questioned regarding the firearm but failed to provide a satisfactory explanation or a valid firearm licence.

“He was subsequently arrested and detained at Springs Police Station,” Zwane said.

He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for possession of an unlicensed firearm, and five years imprisonment for possession of unlicensed ammunition.

“The sentences will run concurrently. The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. The station commander, Brigadier Raymond Buthelezi, commended Mogashoa for his dedication and commitment to ensuring that illegal firearms are moved from the community and offenders are brought to justice,” Zwane said.
