There was a grand turnout from Springs residents at the annual 2.5km fun walk/run hosted by Vita Nova in Daggafontein on July 19.
Despite the gloomy weather, people arrived in colourful outfits, joined by their furry friends. Various organisations supported the cause, including the Springs Gold Rotary Club, Dr Thulani Mthimunye’s Selcourt Vet Hospital, and the South African Civil Aviation Authority.
While some participants took a relaxed pace to enjoy the walk, others seized the opportunity to race to the finish line, where they were welcomed with goodie bags.
Patric Jiya, who came first in the run, told the Springs Advertiser he was thrilled with his win.
“Last year, I participated but came second. So now winning is amazing for me,” he said, still catching his breath.
Jiya was followed by the Roux brothers, Vivian and Ettiene. Vivian said he was glad to have finished the race with his younger brother close behind.
Ronel Botha, who came fourth overall, was the first woman across the line. She shared her excitement at placing in the top five.
“This is not my first race with Vita Nova. I run for fun, so being here and still enjoying myself was great,” said Botha.
Residents from the Vita Nova Centre also took part in the walk, accompanied by care workers.

Michelle Immelman from the centre expressed her gratitude to those who came out in support, despite the chilly weather.
“This year’s participants were over a thousand, and every year we host the event, it gets bigger and better. We get more support,” she said.
Immelman added that many people shared how much fun they had with friends and family. She confirmed that the funds raised will go toward caring for the centre’s residents.
“Events like this raise awareness that people living with disabilities can also have fun with abled people and enjoy walks too,” she said.
