Springs police warn community of scam artists impersonating officers
Scammers are using fake money drops and chemical spills to trick residents before stealing their funds.
Springs SAPS has urged community members to remain cautious following reports of fraudsters impersonating police officers to rob victims.
According to local police spokesperson Sergeant Charity Zwane, Springs police have received several complaints from community members who have been scammed by individuals pretending to be police officers, particularly investigating officers.
She described how scammers use different methods to gain the victim’s trust, including a common tactic of deliberately placing what appears to be money on the ground.
“When the victim notices the money or shows interest, the scammer approaches and suggests that they share the money.
“While walking to a supposed location to divide the money, another individual approaches the victim and identifies themselves as an investigating officer,” Zwane said.

“The fake officer then questions the victim about the cash in their possession and instructs them to access their banking app. The victim is subsequently robbed of money from their bank account.”
Chemical scam tactic
She added that another method involves smearing the victim with a black substance before pretending to warn them.
“They approach the victim, pretending to assist them and warning that their money may disappear. The suspect uses this opportunity to gain the victim’s trust and ultimately steal their money,” Zwane said.
She shared the following safety tips:
- Do not pick up or show interest in money deliberately thrown on the ground by strangers.
- Do not agree to share or divide money with a stranger.
- Be cautious of anyone who suddenly identifies themselves as a police officer and demands to see your cash or banking application. SAPS members will not ask you to disclose your banking PIN, password or other confidential banking information.
- Never allow strangers to access or operate your cellphone.
- Immediately report suspicious activity to the police.
