Rio Grappling goes to war
On August 10 the Cage Wars Championships (CWC) will be taking place at the Springs Indoor Centre.
The tournament will host Africa’s largest steel cage which has been shipped in especially from Britain and local fighters from Springs Rio Grappling Club will be participating.
This circular cage has hosted numerous CWC fights, and is in search of bloody action on Saturday night.
Ugi Radulovic faces Mark Hulme for the first time. Ugi expects Mark to be fit, have a range of fighting expertise and a specific style for Ugi to be weary of.
Ugi is a well-rounded fighter, having karate and six years Jujitsu experience, as well as a black belt graded by well-known fighter in the martial arts fraternity, Ruberto Atalla.
Even though Ugi has not entered the cage in over a year, he will be fighting the main event of the evening looking to overthrow Mark and be king of the cage.
Jan Hendrik Booysen will be facing Gino Veludo for the first time.
He expects Veludo to take the fight to the mat, but Jan would like to keep it standing and then work him down to the mat.
Jan may not have any specific fighting moves but he goes into the event with three wins and two losses despite not winning a fight for over a year.
Shaun Joubert will be making his CWC debut when he goes head-to-head with Kobus Dauth.
He has a blue belt in Brazilian Jujitsu (BJJ) and has been training for two years for his CWC debut.
Shaun expects Kobus to have a big right hand punch and would like to keep the fight standing as long as he can.
Stefan Pretorius will be making his pro-amateur debut to the CWC event on the night.
He faces David Mazinyane for the first time.
David is a skilled professional boxer with six wins and two losses to his name.
Stefan’s game plan will be to ‘beat the hell out of him’ and utilise his kickboxing abilities in a standing fight against David and execute his BJJ if the fight has to resort to the mat.
Tumisang Madiba will be battling it out with Iguer Kabesa, the reigning African Fight League (AFL) champion.
Tumisang challenged Iguer after he told his followers at a recent event in Nelspruit that Tumisang could not fight or beat him.
Tumisang expects Iguer to keep the fight standing, which Tumisang says he is more than capable of handling.
He would like to work Iguer down to the mat for some ground and pound punches, using his special ‘Zulu boy’ fight move and hopefully get Iguer to tap out into a submission.
Iguer will be stepping into the cage with seven wins and zero losses and Tumisang says his zero has to go.
Willie Human will be going to war against self-professed brawler Tyron Giovanni for the first time.
Willie, who is skilled in the martial art of Maui Thai, has been kickboxing for two years at Rio Grappling Club and would like to combine his Maui Thai with it.
He will also be making his debut at CWC in his first full contact Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight.
Looking forward to his fight and the event, Willie wants to outclass the brawler with his MMA skills.
“Expect a good quality amateur event in a 10.5m wide steel circular cage, the biggest fighting cage in Africa,” says Putter.
This will be the second time CWC will be hosted in Springs. Last year’s event drew 1 400 people and Jurgen is expecting more this year.
Doors open at 4pm and the fights will start from 6pm.
The weigh-ins for the fighters will be held tomorrow (Friday) at The Avenues Shopping Centre and are open to the public.
