Springs beats Randfontein

Springs Rugby Club had a good weekend as two of their three teams, which played against Randfontein at Olympia Park sports grounds on Saturday, won their games.

With the third and U/21 teams not playing, it was up to the U/19, second and third teams to keep the Springs name high in the Predator league.

The U/19 team was first on the field and despite their best efforts, they could not beat the stronger Randfontein side. They lost 12-17.

The second team showed Randfontein what Springsites are made of when they won their game 16-12.

These matches were just to warm up the spectators, who could not wait for the first teams to take to the field.

It was a tough match, with Randfontein scoring first. But eighth-man Anton van Deventer got the crowd on their feet and lifted his team’s spirit when he scored the first try for Springs.

This set the pace for a great, nail-biting game.

Although the Randfontein boys tried their best, they could not break Springs’ spirit and the home team won 34-26.

Coach Kobus van Rooyen says he is happy with the win and it speaks of great things to come.

Kobus has coached Springs’ first team for 12 years, during which time he saw his team win the league 10 times.

But over the past two years there have been many changes within the team and most of the players have come from the U/21 team.

The team is very new and, says Kobus, it takes time for the players to build self-confidence and gain experience.

“We have to mould them for the first team and we have to build the team. We hope that next year will go even better than this year,” says Kobus.

The first team came third in the Valke league, says Kobus, which shows they are growing and improving.

Springs’ last match of the Predator league takes place in Johannesburg on Saturday, against Union.
