Bowling fund-raiser a success, despite cloudburst
The Springs Old Boys Bowling Club hosted their biggest fund-raising event of the year on Friday.
Eighty eight participants gathered at Springs Old Boys Club’s corporate bowls day on Friday, as part of the clubs biggest fund-raiser of the year.
Bowlers and non-bowlers from 22 companies from in and around Springs, sponsored a team of four players at R1 600 per team.
The event, which had a festive atmosphere with upbeat music, has been held on the last Friday of November for the past 16 years, says club member Mike Clarke who was standing in for the chairman.
“It’s a very casual day,” he says.
The registration fee also included tea time refreshments and a carvery for lunch – plus a party after the bowling tournament.
Unfortunately, the tournament had to be stopped early at 12.30pm due to rain.
The Jelly Tot Babes team came in first place with 19 points and each bowler walked away with a Go Blender.
ATM Components Three came second and all team-mates won a George Forman ‘In Shape’ griller, while a member of their team, Andy Selby, took home a wheelbarrow filled to the brim with liquor, as a raffle prize.
With 10 points each, Rebel Safety came third and Quench Corner fourth. ATM Component One finished in fifth place with eight points, thus earning the same number of points as sixth-placed Usizo Security.
“We had a wonderful turnout and everyone was ecstatic; and enjoyed it so much,” says club member Sharon Pratt.
The consolation prize went to Largo Stax, who earned negative 19 points.
The club’s Twilight Pairs competition also drew to a close on Thursday, which saw Tom de Scally and Duncan Ross from the Brakpan Mines Bowling Club, walk away with the trophy after five weekly evening rounds.
