Wrestling fans treated to a masterclass at Springs Mall

Wrestlers put on a dazzling show at Springs Mall.

Wrestling fans were treated to a great show by South African Pro-Wrestling on Monday afternoon at the Springs Mall.

There were three matches on the day and each was greater than the last one.

The afternoon started with a Triple Threat Match between Fisherman Fred, Blade and Big Fire.

Big Fire played it smart during the match and seemed to hold back during the fight to let Blade and Fisherman Fred tire each other out.

The Kinshasa native’s strategy worked as he won by a submission hold on Fisherman Fred.

Blade struggled with a knee injury early on and it limited his ability to perform well.

Local wrestler JDX did not disappoint his fans as he won against Spaniard Zakes.

Zakes, who was angry throughout the match, started out well but couldn’t get the job done against JDX who eventually won by pinfall.

The Springs public was overjoyed to see their local sports star win.

Alejandro flies from the top rope to do a triple somersault on Matthew Hammar.

The high-flying acrobatics of Matthew Hammar and Alejandro were entertaining and the pair, who appeared to be evenly matched, thrilled the crowd as they flew across the ring.

After several near pinfalls for each wrestler, Alejandro did a triple somersault from the top rope to win by pinfall over Hammar.

The main match of the afternoon was the Hardcore Title Match where The Crow defended his title against The Cowboy.

It was a no disqualification match and both wrestlers smashed each other’s heads and bodies with keyboards, barbed-wire covered boards and sticks.

The Cowboy dominated the majority of the match and it looked like he was going home with the title.

However, interference by Griffin eventually swung the match The Crow’s way as he successfully defended his title.

In his remarks after the fight, The Cowboy said to Griffin, “I don’t know what that was but I am coming for your heavyweight title and then after that, I’m coming for the Hardcore Title.

“It will just be by myself with the heavyweight title.”

The matches by South African Pro-Wrestling was part of the birthday celebrations at the Springs Mall.

The crowd loved every minute of it and manager Gerrie Kuyper was thrilled to bring wrestling to Springs.

“The interest has grown over the past few years and South African talent is on par with the rest of the world, we just need exposure.

“The young and old love wrestling and it is really a family sport,” says Kuyper.

The organisation is based at the Brakpan Indoor Centre and practice is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm.

“All you need is passion and commitment, there’s no height or build required,” says Kuyper.
