Geduld boxing club wins three titles at the Ekurhuleni Junior and Youth Championship

“It was a close fight which I'm glad about. It brought me back down to earth,” says Geannè Dicks.

The Bert Collins Open Boxing Club hosted the Ekurhuleni Junior and Youth Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The venue was packed as spectators cheered for their favourite boxers.

Each fight had three two-minute rounds with five judges.

In the first fight, Minnet Dicks of Bert Collins Open Boxing Club fought against Lungile Sopazi of Sunrise Boxing in the 54kg Junior Division.

Dicks was aggressive from the get-go and showed little sign of being under the weather.

“My opponent was tough at the beginning, but my coach said a few inspirational words and that helped me.

“The fight was easy, but I still had to give my best,” said Dicks after the fight, which she won.

Next up was three-time SA champ Geannè Dicks, also of Bert Collins Open Boxing Club, against Edna Kok of Sunrise Boxing in the 64kg Junior Division.

Geannè showed why she is a champion as she rallied after a tough start.

“She was definitely stronger than last year and for a second there I thought I had lost.

“It was a close fight which I’m glad about. It brought me back down to earth,” says Geannè.

Completing the trio of fights for Bert Collins Open Boxing Club was Chantel Erasmus fighting in the 54kg Youth Division against Jacqui Fryer of Elsburg.

Erasmus made quick work of Fryer even though she had not trained at full capacity leading up to the fight because of a chest infection.

“My strategy for this fight was to end it as quickly as possible because I knew I wouldn’t last three rounds because I couldn’t breathe.

“I also knew that my opponent couldn’t take a hard punch,” says Erasmus.

Bert Collins Open Boxing Club now boasts three Ekurhuleni champions and looks forward to competing in the Gauteng championships and then nationals later this year.
