Springs Crew MMA fight to put their name on the map

Kalala's fighting record is impressive with him undefeated in four fights even though he only started competing last year.

Didos ‘Soldier Asylum’ Kalala is gearing up for his fight at the Extreme Warrior Championship (EWC) on Saturday in Johannesburg.

The fighter, who will be representing the Springs Crew MMA, hopes this fight will bring him one step closer to fighting for the bantamweight title.

Kalala’s fighting record is impressive with him undefeated in four fights even though he only started competing last year.

“My first fight was last year when I stood in for another fighter who unexpectedly had to pull out.

“I won that fight with a technical knock-out (TKO) in the second round.

“For me, the title is just a symbol, I’m already a champion,” says Kalala.

The amateur fighter says his love for the sport has grown and he hopes to promote the sport which he says has kept him from getting involved with the wrong crowd.

“I was initially attracted to it (MMA) because of the self-defence part of it, but I’ve found that my strength and fitness have improved at the same time,” says Kalala.

The Congolese national says in preparation for his fight he has been studying his opponent, but says it is more important to be the best version of yourself.

“It’s good to know the other fighter’s background, but you can’t focus on that too much.

“What if you get into the cage and he switches his style and surprises you. Then you’ll be in trouble.

“Rather focus on your strength and stamina, and you will be able to crush anyone,” says Kalala.

The Springs Crew MMA also has six other amateur fighters who will be looking to make their mark on the sport.

“As a team, we want to walk the journey together and I want to see the fighters get to the top of the sport.

“It’s not only about winning, but also about friendship and the way we support each other,” says coach Derick Brewis.

The team trains every day and those interested in joining them can contact Brewis on 073 172 4382 or coach Ben Sheylton Ntanbwe on 084 607 3535.
