Team H20 conquers the Midmar Mile

The event was a family affair as Ellerbeck swam her mile with her father, who swam his mile the following day.

Team H2O took part in the Midmar Mile on February 9 and 10 in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal.

The team was part of 14 000 swimmers who took part in the event, which is in its 46th year.

Keira Ellerbeck (9), the youngest member of the team, swam the mile (1.61km) in 47 minutes.

Ellerbeck says, “I was scared in the beginning, but I think I did very well and I will do it again next year.”

The event was a family affair as Ellerbeck swam her mile with her father, who swam his own mile the following day.

Team H2O has been taking part in the race for six years and all who took part improved on their previous times.

Jessie Moodley, Connor Kruger, Jeremy Moodley and Jessie Moodley completed their 10th Midmar Mile.

The junior swimmers in Team H20 have a lot to be proud about after their performance at the Lois Bassett Memorial Gala this past weekend.

“I’m very proud of everyone who took part.

“They were absolutely fantastic,” says coach Heather Grafe.

The team also took part in the Lois Bassett Memorial Gala at the Boksburg Indoor Swimming Pool last Saturday.

The gala was held in honour of the late Benoni swimming coach Lois Bassett, who was instrumental in the founding of the Benoni Northern Areas Amateur Swimming Club.

This development gala included a kicker-board race, a butterfly event and sprints.

Twenty-one swimmers entered, with only four pulling out.

“For most swimmers, it was their first time competing in a gala for H20 and they all finished their races and some even got medals.

“From here on, they will just continue to grow and improve,” says Grafe.

The Midmar Mile and galas form part of the busy swimming season.

The team is preparing to take part in other races in March.
