Knowing the ins and outs of the game

How to play lawn bowling

Players from Springs Town Bowling Club did not let the scorching sun stop them from indulging in their favourite sport on Saturday afternoon.

“Today is a social gathering.

“We have all come to play for enjoyment,” explains Izak Hattingh, vice chairperson of the club.

Below are the lawn bowling rules:

In the game of lawn bowls the game is played up and down a rink.

This means that a player has the chance to play on both sides of the green.

In singles, each player will often play four bowls.

However, in “pairs” each player plays four bowls.

The first player on each side bows all four bowls and then the second player bowls four bowls.

The pattern is true for triples.

Emma Raguza enjoyed social bowls on Saturday at Springs Town Bolwing Club.

And in “fours” or “rinks”, four players play just two bowls each.

A player must stand with one foot on a centrally placed small black mat while bowling.

The mat is placed by the player who starts.

Once the end is over, the mat is moved to the other end of the rink and play starts in the reverse direction.

A bowl that falls into the ditch is out of play unless it is a “toucher”, meaning that it has previously touched the jack during the end.

The ditch can be considered the ‘barrier’ on either side of the lawn.

To keep track of play, any bowl that touches the jack is marked with a cross using chalk.

The Springs Town Bowling Club’s league games will take place on Tuesday from 2pm.
