Springs Wheelers host major cycling event

Two young but talented cyclists from Springs Wheelers, Jayden Gould and Kyle Robertson, took part in the 62km challenge.

The Springs Wheelers organised and participated in the 2020 Dis-Chem Ride for Sight bicycle race on Sunday.

Thousands of cyclists from all over the East Rand and the rest of the country gathered at the Boksburg Stadium on a cool but clear Sunday morning.

The day would soon heat up, adding an extra challenge for the cyclists.

Cyclists took to the road at intervals in groups.

There were two main events, the 116km road challenge and the 62km road race, as well as some tandem bike races.

The 116km course took riders through the entire East Rand, with various water stops dotted around the route to relieve thirsty riders.

Many roads in Boksburg were closed off as cyclists took on the gruelling challenge after spending months training for it.

Platinum Gold Radio broadcast live from the stadium and provided the riders with words of encouragement before they started on their journey.

Two young but talented cyclists from Springs Wheelers, Jayden Gould and Kyle Robertson, took part in the 62km challenge.

Kyle Robertson’s training paid off when he crossed the finish line in 10th place in the u-17 61km race.

Gould is part of Team Cycling Box, a young team promoting up-and-coming youngsters in road racing and mountain biking.

Gould finished ninth in a time of 1 hour 43 minutes and 3 seconds, and Robertson finished 10th in a time of 1 hour 43 minutes and 3 seconds in the u-17 62km category.

The longer event, the 116km, was won by Dusty Day in a time of 2 hours 34 minutes and 14 seconds in a bunch sprint which saw the top-four riders all being credited with the same time.

Second place went to Jayde Julius and third place to David Maree.
