Motorcycle racer Jason van Breda (15) has reached a major milestone in his racing career after being invited to attend the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup Selection Event in Spain.

The selection event will take place from October 5 to 7 at the Circuito Mike G Guadix in Granada, Spain, where young riders from around the world will compete for an opportunity to secure a place on the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup grid.

The Boksburg youngster is the son of local racing champion Graeme van Breda (Van Breda Suzuki Springs).

He is scheduled to take part in his official riding evaluation on October 6. A strong performance could see him progress to the final evaluation rounds on October 7.

Graeme said that the invitation was a huge honour for their family, which has a long history in motorsport.

“It meant the world to us to hear the news. We are a motorsport family and Jason is a third-generation SA champion.

“He is one of only two SA boys chosen, so it is a huge honour for him to be picked,” said Graeme.

According to his father, Jason has been racing motorcycles for nine years and has already won four national titles. Graeme said the opportunity could represent the next major step in his son’s career.

“This would be the next step were he to be selected,” he said.

However, Graeme explained that competing internationally presented challenges for young South African riders, particularly around resources and support.

“Coming from SA, the children just don’t have the resources, the backing or the equipment that the overseas kids have, so it’s always a long shot,” he said.

“Unfortunately, it’s not just about how fast you are or how much talent you have. They are looking for the complete package.”

Despite the challenges, Graeme believes being selected would give Jason an important opportunity to establish himself at an international level.

“If he were to make it, it would be a massive achievement and a foot in the door at the world-level Grand Prix,” he said.

The invitation also carries personal significance for Graeme, whose own family has a history in motorcycle racing.

“I never had the opportunity to race abroad,” he shared. “However, I did compete in World Championship rounds here in SA.

“My late dad did race Grands Prix in the 70s in the World Championship and was a top privateer.”

The family hopes Jason follows in his grandfather’s footsteps.
