Dwayne Johnson is back in a more erious role as John Mathews, a family man who works in construction, oblivious about his estranged son’s involvement in a drug cartel.

But when his son is in trouble, he goes undercover to prove his son’s innocence in a drug distribution ring and take down a Mexican drug cartel.

I found Dwayne out of his depth as a serious character in this film. His action abilities compensate for his subtle yet cliché drama performances though.

It also features Susan Sarandon, as Joanne Keeghan, an out for justice District Attorney and Benjamin Bratt who plays an interesting drug dealer.

The plot of the movie builds up in a race-against-time fashion and has its popcorn moments. One of them for me was seeing Dwayne getting beaten up by a group of small time drug dealers.

For a drama-thriller it has its bouts of action to cover up for flaws in its story.

Dwayne’s previous action films have portrayed his strengths as an action hero, but this film left a lot to be desired out of the main character and let the plot do the work where the actor could not.

If you like films with Dwayne, this movie will not be making leave you wanting more, but asking when it will end.
