Water leaks a major problem

Over the past few months, there seem to have been a number of problems with the water distribution systems in Springs.

The Advertiser has been inundated with phone calls and e-mails about water pressure problems, water being switched off for days on end and water leaking out of water meters for months.

According to Councillor Dean Stone, the water pipe infrastructure in Springs is old and needs upgrading.

“Unfortunately the metro does not see this as a priority at this stage,” he says.

“We are also receiving high call volumes regarding water problems and are handling them on a case for by case basis.”

Dean adds that the Water Department in Springs is one of the better run departments and seems to respond speedily to their complaints.

Ekurhuleni metro spokesman Samuel Modiba says that the metro is aware that Springs has water leaks.

“We do experience water leaks from time to time. This is the reason why we have teams do the repairs as and when required.”

Modiba adds that once the metro identifies a problem, they will then usually renovate the pipes.

“Our asset register also assists us in making sure that we prioritise areas according to age and condition of the infrastructure.”

Despite the metro confirming that it intends to replace pipes when needed, the community is frustrated at the lack of communication and follow-through from it and are in desperate need to know why Springs is having so many water problems, but with no real answer to this question from the metro.

Community members were asked on Facebook to comment on what they think about the water situation in Springs.

“When it comes to the meters, I don’t know how many times I have reported my meter and it keeps on leaking and now the water runs slowly to my taps,” says Iris Mokoena.

Marge Knoesen Griffin thinks the municipality is not doing its job properly.

“After the last non-water day, the pressure is absolutely low and we battle to get hot water out of the tap. What is wrong?” asks Zelda Boshoff.

Ben Smith says “Quite obviously Ekurhuleni doesn’t work and the people of Springs deserve better. Perhaps an alternative would be to break away from the metro. I recall far better service delivery when we had our own council running things. Also having a mayor and exco that actually lived in Springs experiencing the same pathetic service would make a difference.”
