Local actor jetting off to New York City

Local actor to attend talent show in New York

Aspiring Springs actor Colin Doller (23) has won the opportunity of a lifetime.
Through handwork and determination, Doller has won a bursary to attend the New York Film Academy in June next year.
How long have you been acting?
I’ve loved films since I was very young.
But it was only this year that I actually thought I could act and tried to do something different with my life.
What do you love most about acting?
I love the fact that you can be anyone you want to be.
You just jump into the shoes of this character and your life changes.

What genre of films would you like to be in?
It would definitely be comedies, I really love making people laugh.
Some of my favorite shows are sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory, and I can really see myself doing something like that.
What has been your biggest inspiration in your career thus far?
My biggest inspiration has been how difficult it is get into acting in this country.
In places like America there are TV shows and movies everywhere, so you have many choices.
But here you have to really look very, very hard for opportunities.
One of my aims is to break this trend, and make opportunities for other aspiring actors a little bit easier.

Colin Doller hopes to make a difference in the South African filmmaking scene.

Who are some of your favourite actors that have inspired how you work?
My main ones would be Steve Carrel from The Office, I think he is extremely funny.
Samuel L Jackson is also one of my favorites, and one of the most talented working today.
I also like Charlize Theron and the fact that she’s South African.
How will you prepare for your trip?
I will be very busy. I have a boot camp in March, where my agent will help me with delivering monologues, one for drama and one for comedy.
So there’s still a lot of work to be done.

Are there other aspects of filmmaking you would like to get involved with?
I would love to see more of what happens behind the scenes, especially cinematography.
What advice do you have for younger aspiring actors?
First of all, don’t be afraid of rejection.
Unfortunately, most of the auditions you go to will reject you, but that’s just the nature of the industry.
But must never give up and keep searching. Also, find a good agent, and never stop seeking opportunities.
