Seniors enjoy St Patrick’s Day celebration at Springs club

Members said the celebrations give seniors a chance to socialise, share stories and enjoy time together, especially for those who live alone.

Members of the Springs Senior Citizens Club celebrated St Patrick’s Day on March 13 with a themed lunch, games, Irish songs and dancing.

The event offered seniors an opportunity to enjoy a shared meal, socialise and take part in a cheerful gathering inspired by the Irish holiday.

Club manager Pauline Houghton said that they celebrated the holiday because it is one of the ways to bring the members together under one roof for a joyous festivity.

She also said that the members are always happy to celebrate, as many of them stay alone and use the occasion as an excuse to dress up.

“We keep our members engaged with activities through the year and our themed celebrations because we do not want to bore them with one thing over again.

“We need to have fresh ideas because the number of members increases. We have started a library, and we got board games for the winter,” shared Houghton.

Houghton said that the events help the members with physical and mental stimulations as they use the time to interact, socialise and dance.

Two of the members, Sheila Milner and Ingrid Botha, told the publication that as a club, they are fortunate to have Houghton, who keeps them entertained.

Milner said that socialising with her fellow members is always a great part of the events, as they use the time to catch up.

“We always meet people from different backgrounds and language groups, and for me, it is a growing experience,” said Botha.
