Funding delays halt Murray Park development in Springs

Officials say the park will reopen once funding is secured to finish outstanding work.

The City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed the temporary closure of Murray Park in Springs. According to the metro spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, the decision was taken at the commencement of development works to ensure public safety during construction.

He explained that the original plan was to upgrade the park and rehabilitate the dilapidated structures, which have since been implemented.

Dlamini said that work was carried out, including clear-view fencing, construction of play areas, paving pathways, lighting, a sitting area, tree cutting, an amphitheatre, a skatepark, parking, a function hall and an ablution facility.

Dlamini shared that the main challenge encountered was that the project was implemented in phases, subject to budget availability.

When funding was not available, progress had to be halted until additional funds were secured.

In October 2017, the metro stated that a contractor had been on site for a while, that there were no delays in progress, and that phase two would be completed at the end of that month, with the last phase set to commence soon afterwards, as the contractor had already been appointed.

“The city has not conducted any recent inspections, as the project has been halted, but as soon as the budget is available, we will continue with the plans,” he said.

He added that the park’s reopening is subject to the availability of funding to complete the outstanding works.

Dlamini noted that security guards are in place to ensure the park is secured, and that public participation was conducted and that plans were presented.

“Sourcing of local labour is determined during implementation of the project in line with project phases and the requirements,” concluded the spokesperson.
