Young cyclists gear up for Selection Park MTB race event
The event aims to develop cycling skills in a safe and competitive environment.
The XCC/XCO cycling race returns to Laerskool Selection Park as the school hosts its second annual event on May 16.
The event was launched last October for primary school learners with an interest in cycling to experience the thrill of XCC and XCO racing.
The organiser, Brian Style, told the Springs Advertiser that this year’s event will have children from 11 schools competing in the race, with 43 children registered. The entries will close on May 6.
“The parents can expect a fun morning supporting their kids around the track where they can enjoy their bikes in a competitive, yet safe environment, giving them a taste of what MTB racing is all about,” shared Style.
He explained that the race is meant for development and that, as the organiser, they need to carefully balance safety versus challenge in order to keep it safe for all the riders alike.

He said that not all children have been exposed to this type of racing at national events, such as the Trailseeker series and the Schools Super League series.
Style explained that it will be far too intimidating for children who are still at the developmental level.
Despite challenges in organising the event, he hopes that the cyclists and the parents will enjoy the event.
Registration and number collection will open at 07:30 on the day, and the first race will start at 08:15.
The community is encouraged to come and support the cyclists. For more information, contact Style on 079 873 8313.
