Hospital patient attempts to jump

The staff at Witbank Hospital did not know what to expect from a patient who squeezed through a window and was sitting on an outside window pane.

A hospital is a place of care and safety for the ill. No matter what the illness may be, the hospital staffs is trained to be able to attend to any emergency that may arise, even that which is most rare. The staff at Witbank Hospital did not know what to expect from a patient who squeezed through a window and was sitting on an outside window pane.

On February 19, a patient at Witbank Hospital gave the staff a scare when he was discovered sitting outside the building. The problem was not that he was outside, but how high up he was from the ground. The patient squeezed himself through a window with burglar bars on the second floor. He was sitting calmly there, basking in the sun.

The patient did not seem disorientated and he spoke fluently with the staff and paramedics who helped him down. Mr Dino Payachee, CEO of Langamed Emergency Management Services, was on the scene with other paramedics and they managed to get him down using a step-ladder and much persuasion.

The patient said to the journalist, “I am just sitting here. These people are crazy; I do not want to jump.” After some time the patient got up and moved to a shady area as he said that the sun was now burning him.

Matron Naomi Rakometsi was also there with other staff members to try and calm the situation. She said that as soon as the patient was on safe ground he would be examined and probably transferred to the psychiatric ward.
