Department considers Piet Koornhof Building for eMalahleni licence collection
Motorists face ongoing uncertainty following the health and safety shutdown of the main licensing office in eMalahleni in July.
There is still no clear indication from the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison regarding the collection of driver’s licences.

Department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said officials are looking into the availability of an office in the Piet Koornhof Building.
“We are not yet ready for driving licence card collection at the Piet Koornhof Building, but we may do so possibly before the end of the week,” said Mmusi.
Licensing office shut over safety hazards
Motorists have been waiting for word on where to pick up their licences since the main licensing office was closed by the Department of Employment and Labour (DEL) on July 18, following a video and article by Witbank News uncovering the poor state of the building employees work in.
“The inspection findings confirm that the employer failed to provide a safe environment by failing to maintain building structures. The building was prohibited for occupation due to unsafe electrical installations, biological hazards caused by water leaks in the building and ceiling boards that may collapse at any given time,” said DEL provincial chief inspector Boikie Mampuru.

He added that the office will resume operations once the conditions that threaten the health and safety of employees and the public have been minimised to the satisfaction of the inspector.

Alternative options for renewals
Motorists wanting to renew their licences can go to Ga-Nala, Bronkhorstspruit or Middelburg.
The satellite office at the eMalahleni Fire Department is operating, but it only handles licence renewals.
