Another string of violent crimes strikes eMalahleni

In a string of violent crimes reported over the weekend, both motorists and pedestrians were targeted and overpowered.

Witbank SAPS is investigating a series of violent incidents, including armed robberies and a rape case, that occurred across eMalahleni over the weekend.

According to the police, on August 15 at around 18:00, a motorist was attacked at the corner of Walter Sisulu Street and Beatty Avenue in the CBD. The man reported that two men opened the back door of his vehicle, entered, and threatened him with knives. The duo allegedly made off with his cellphone.

The previous evening, August 14 at 20:00, a victim was reportedly robbed while walking home from a shop in Klarinet. He told the police that two men, both allegedly armed with firearms, confronted him and took his cellphone along with his money.

Just an hour later, another robbery occurred in Klarinet Ext 3 near the local clinic. A man reported that two men approached him, one allegedly held him at gunpoint while the other searched him. The suspects allegedly stole his cellphone before fleeing the scene.

Rape reported in Siyanqoba
In a separate case, police confirmed a rape incident in Siyanqoba on August 15 at about 20:00. The victim, who had taken a taxi from the CBD, was dropped off at the Siyanqoba taxi rank. It is alleged that another passenger followed her, threatened her with a knife, and forced her into nearby bushes. The man reportedly raped her before stealing her cellphone and leaving her at the scene.

Police step up patrols
According to the Witbank SAPS’ spokesperson, Warrant Officer David Ratau, police have opened cases of robbery and rape, with investigations currently underway.

He noted that SAPS teams, led by acting station commander Colonel Nonhlanhla Kgosana, together with CPF members, visited the Klarinet area to patrol over the weekend.

“We are pleading with motorists to just yield and pass stop signs if it’s late at night and if it’s safe for them to do so. They should be mindful of their surroundings and make sure that their car doors are locked,” Ratau said.

“For pedestrians, they must always be observant. If you are walking and see people who look suspicious, change directions or just cross the road and go to the other side,” he said.

He further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any information that could assist in identifying the suspects.
