To save a city from drugs

The green-leaved plants seemed less threatening under the glaring light of the police station

Strange to think that it can cause so many people to fall into the trap of addiction… Perhaps the little plastic balls filled with heroin could also look less intimidating to the users; who are slowly losing their lives to these ‘harmless-looking’ drugs.

In the continuous war against drugs, the Witbank SAPS arrested five people during last week and confiscated illegal drugs found in their possession. On Wednesday January 22 the first two suspects were caught red-handed by the police. One of the suspects was found behind the Licence Department in the Central Business District, early on Wednesday at around 08:15. Police reported that the man was found in possession of a small plastic bag filled with dagga and a container, which held 11 pinches.
Following the suspect to his home, police then found another two bags filled with dagga, as well as a suspicious looking ball of newspaper that was discovered containing more drugs.

At around 09:00, a woman was arrested in old Corronation, suspected for dealing and selling drugs.
It was here that police discovered and uprooted dagga plants and confiscated as many as 84 newspaper bundles and 20 matchboxes filled with dagga intended to be sold to ‘customers’.
Back at the police station, the confiscated drugs was counted and amounted to a street-value of roughly R10 000.

The following day, Thursday January 23, police arrested the other two suspects.
Police members had received information about drugs being sold in Springvalley and soon discovered a house where many ‘customers’ go to buy dagga. They searched the house to find the drugs and arrested the man suspected as the dealer.
Another house in Springvalley was searched a few hours later and police found more drugs concealed in three small plastic bags. The man arrested, claimed that he was not dealing in drugs and said that he was merely a user. Police will continue to investigate.

On Sunday January 26, the fifth suspect caught with drugs, was arrested in the Tasbet Park area. The police member who was patrolling the area reported that the suspect was found in possession of dagga (street value of R400).

Col Manus Oosthuizen of the Witbank SAPS, commended the police members involved in the arrests and warned drug dealers that ‘their days are numbered’. Capt Eddie Hall, spokesperson of the Witbank SAPS, relayed the message saying: “We will use everything in our power to see that there is no drugs left in the city”.

*Families and members of the community are asked to stand together against the abuse of drugs and remember the lives taken by addiction.

“Crying on the outside and dying on the inside.
That’s me; that’s all you can see.
But what you don’t see is that it’s not really me,
Or at least not the person that I once used to be.
I’m drowning in my addiction, this is true,
But I’m desperately reaching out to you.
Won’t you throw me a life line,
And try to help me save this life of mine?”
