On the highway to jail

Intoxicated drivers put their lives, as well as those of others’ at risk and during recent police operations, several of these culprits were arrested to pay for their crimes.

Around 22:55 on Tuesday January 28, a police official on patrol in Allenby Street witnessed how a driver had jumped several stop signs and a robot, while driving at an incredible speed. The reckless driver, who was then pulled over by the police officer, was found to be very intoxicated and was taken to the Witbank Police Station. Another man was arrested 20 minutes later, for driving under the influence, on the corners of Watermeyer and Kiepersol Street.

On Friday night January 3, three more people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Patrolling in Mandela Street, police officials saw a Toyota Yaris veering off in the lane it was driving. It became clear that whoever was driving the car, either could not drive or was presumably intoxicated. Police pulled the car over and a female driver was arrested.

A man caught speeding on the N4 off ramp and driving over a red robot in Mandela Street, was also brought into the police station. The police officer on duty reported that he could smell alcohol as he spoke to the man and that the driver was taken for a blood test.

Police were called to another accident the very same day, where they investigated the scene on the corner of Main and Diederics Streets. One of the drivers, suspected to have caused the collision between the two vehicles, was sent for a blood test and then arrested by Witbank Police.

During the police operations, the Witbank SAPS set their focus on negligent and intoxicated drivers on the roads. Drivers are warned not to take the chance and drive after the consumption of alcohol. Offenders caught will be arrested and heavily fined.
