On April 24, Mr John Ngake was driving a Hyno truck through eMalahleni as he made his way from Badplaas to Johannesburg. Ngake was transporting mine machinery from one of the nearby mines.
At about 03:30 a blue Volkswagen Jetta flashing a blue light approached from the rear, Ngake was travelling in the left hand lane when the Jetta sped past in the right hand lane and pulled in front of the truck, attempting to slow it down.
Seeing that the truck wasn’t slowing down, the driver of the Jetta pulled up alongside the truck and one of the Jetta’s occupants pointed a gun at Ngake.
Ngake brought the truck to a stop.
Four men from the Jetta climbed into the truck, they bound the driver and drove off for about three hours before forcing the driver from the vehicle.
Ngake was left in the open fields and was able to contact someone who fetched him and took him to hospital for a check-up.
Police are currently investigating a case of truck hijacking, no arrests have been made yet.
