Truck drivers cautioned to check their cargo

Police have confirmed the thefts occurring along the N4.

“In most cases you find that the batteries or diesel of these trucks has been stolen,” said Brig Selbie Mohlale.

Concerns were raised after word spread that a number of truck drivers have reported the theft of their cargos.
“We advise truck drivers to check their cargo at every stop, make sure it is there, this will help the police narrow down the area that is mostly affected by these thefts,” continued Mohlale.

“It is true that trucks pulling over on the side of the road are a problem and we have in the past run safety campaigns aimed at stopping this practice. The campaigns focused on how this practice posed danger to the truck drivers and other members of the public.

The problem seemed to subside slightly, but it seems to have resurfaced again, especially near the Middelburg Plaza,” said Solange Soares-Nicholson, Communications manager, TRAC.

Mohlale added that if truck driver must make a stop they should park in well lit areas, seen by the public.
The police investigation into these cargo thefts continues and no further details have been released.
