On Monday, June 30 Mr Piet Mokwebane, went to Saveways Crescent to draw a large sum of money from the bank.
“On my way out I spoke to a friend at the door,” he said, not realising at the time that one of the people standing in the line at the bank would soon try to rob him of his money.
“My cousin came with me,” Mokwebane continued.
“We were just back at the truck I was driving that day, when the suspects were suddenly all around us.”
Mokwebane remembers how the three men pointed their firearms at him, demanding all his money.
“I tried to mislead them at first, saying that my cousin had it, so I could create enough distraction to try and make a plan for us to get away.”
The robbers continued to demand the money from Mokwebane and he finally reached into his pocket to take out half of the money he withdrew, telling the suspects that it was all he had.
As the robbers tried to flee the scene with the money, they were noticed by policemen, who saw them holding what then appeared to be real, firearms.
The police gave chase to the robbers on foot.
Director of CSC Tactical, Mr Piet Cromhout, added to the tale of how he arrived just in time to help the police take down the fleeing suspects.
“I was just at the stop street when I saw two men being chased by a police officer, shouting for help to stop the robbers.” Cromhout was joined shortly by another one of his colleagues as they helped police to catch the criminals.
The firearms found in the suspects’ possession were discovered to be toy guns. Cromhout found the roll of money in one of the robbers’ pockets and it was promptly returned to Mokwebane.
“I thank the police and everyone who helped to catch them,” Mokwebane said gratefully. “I learned from my mistake now, I won’t draw so much money next time. I’ll rather make a transfer or something.”
The three suspects were taken to Witbank Police Station and their toy guns were confiscated.
